Coeliac disease is a chronic digestive and immune disorder by which the body’s immune system attacks itself when gluten is eaten. This causes damage to the lining of the small intestine leading to malabsorption of some nutrients and consequently malnutrition in the long run.
This is different from having gluten sensitivity or intolerance where no damage to the small intestine is caused despite both having similar symptoms including bloating, abdominal pain, tiredness, etc
While Coeliac disease is mainly genetically driven, other factors like digestive tract infections in children and changes to the gut microbiota (the proportion of good versus harmful bacteria in our tummies) are thought to contribute to the development of this autoimmune condition
Diet helps to improve symptoms within weeks, but digestive system may take up to 2 years to heal completely.
Coeliac disease does affect the absorption of some vitamins and minerals so it’s important to monitor food intake to avoid any nutritional deficiencies
